Winchester’s MP, Mark Oaten has again been discussing the move of the city’s post office this week.
The post office on Middle Brook Street is scheduled to be closed down in May and move into the WH smiths store on the high street by May 22nd.
This is one of 70 national post offices scheduled to close down and move in to stores owned by retailers to reduce annual losses.
After discussing this proposal with the post office bosses Mark Oaten said “The meeting had both good and bad news. The bad news is the Post Office’s determination to shut its existing site without any debate or consultation over this decision. The good news is they are prepared to listen to local views on how the new WH Smith Post Office should operate.”
Original worries were that the people with limited mobility would not be able to use the post office services easily as it was planned to be on the first floor of the store. On hearing this, Mark Oaten said “I’m encouraged that the post office will be located on the ground floor of WH Smiths and they have even agreed to allow community leaders to walk around the proposal site and discuss the layout.”
A final public meeting is scheduled to discuss the plans at the guildhall on Thursday 6th March with the attendance of a WH Smiths and Post Office representative.
